Chocolate Math

Okay, one of my coworkers sent me this, & I thought it was cool:

It takes less than a minute ....
Work this out as you read ...
Be sure you don't read the bottom until you've worked it out!

1. First of all, pick the number of times a week that you would ! like to have chocolate (more than once but less than 10)

2. Multiply this number by 2 (just to be bold)

3. Add 5

4. Multiply it by 50

5. If you have already had your birthday this year add 1755 .... If
you haven't, add 1754.

6. Now subtract the four digit year that you were born.

You should have a three digit number .

The first digit of this was your original number (i.e., how many times you want to have chocolate each week). The next two numbers are . . .

YOUR AGE! (Oh YES, it is!!!!!)

So, I tried this using 5 and 7 as starting numbers, and it worked out both times. The email also said that 2005 was the only year that this would work, but I'm not sure why. Any thoughts?

You should ask the E, the ex-roomie at the Math is sexy blog. She's getting her masters in math. She could easily tell you what was up.

Well, hell's bells, that sure did work twice. I'm always fascinated by these types of things being a liberal arts major. I hate math, and math hates me--but it sure can be fun sometimes.

If you want it to work next year, just change:

1755 to 1756
and 1754 to 1755

the math will stay the same.

other than that, I can't explain it. It's just one of those random, strange algebra things.
